Tumor Tip: When there’s a full-time caregiver in your life who’s not on the payroll—a wife or a husband or a son or a daughter—go out of your way to give that person a forum to talk about what he or she is experiencing. Or just to cry or yell or complain. I can’t stress this enough. I didn’t know to do this, and it weighed heavily on Christie. No one was asking her how she was feeling. It’s understandable for everyone to focus on the patient. That’s just human nature. But I was doing fine. I felt taken care of. I didn’t need all the attention I was getting. Truth be told, Christie could have used some of it. She was doing the majority of the work—taking care of me, essentially, while also preparing for a wedding—without much credit. She was such an incredible trouper that she would never have asked for any, but deep down, I’m sure she (and lots of other people in her position) was thinking, “Doesn’t anyone want to know how I’m doing?” Because when you’re the caregiver, you’re just as much the patient as the actual patient.
